Day 3 : Pic du Midi
Hello there! Team Satignes here.
Today we take you to the Pyrenees, Pic Du Midi de Bigorre!
After a 3-hour long bus ride, we arrived at the foot of the mountain. After taking a double cable car, we arrived at the observatory.
First, we were briefed by an on-site guide, on the history and origins of the observatory.
After a fine meal, we visited the largest telescope in France, the Bernard Lyot telescope! This one was very impressive, see for yourself: (photo)
After a fascinating explanation of the dome, we were taken to a small cinema room. Here we were shown 2 videos on the history of the observatory and on astrophotography.
We concluded the outing with a visit to a coronagraph. It was here on Pic Du Midi that Bernard Lyot invented the very first coronagraph in 1930. As icing on the cake no we got to see some unique footage of an artificial solar eclipse and so our day was over.
It was an interesting and unique experience! We are very happy to have had this opportunity thanks to CanSat.
Greetings,
Team Satignes
